THE KEY'S TO EFFECTIVE ADVOCACY INCLUDE:
Know The Facts: It is critical to have all of the facts on both sides of any issue. Having the information at hand helps in conversations with government officials , the media , other advocates , and the general public.
Use The Facts: Any position taken should be grounded in the facts. When presenting the facts they should be put in a form easily read and put into one pagers for distribution.
Have A Clear And Concise Message: Government officials , the press , and the general public do not have time for long-winded conservations or documents. Get to the point quickly and concisely, remembering to watch out for jargon and acronyms used in different fields. everyone needs to understand the issues being raised.
Nurture Relationships And Work Collaboratively: Advocacy is a joint venture , where you seek allies and work with them. The chances of success are greater when there large numbers of organizations and people on your side. It is important everyone has consistent data and the same message.
Engage The Public: Use the media, social media, petitions, letters, e-mails, and other grassroots strategies to engage as many Moffat County residents as possible. Numbers speak loudly to elected officials!
Make Your Voice Heard: Being and advocate is not the place for being shy. Make sure to spread the word-through meetings with government officials, press conferences, letters, petitions, rallies and phone calls. Plus talk about the issues at dinner parties and social events- you never know who can become a useful ally.
Say Thank You: A good advocate remembers everyone is busy and their time is valuable . Keep meetings short and always say thank you afterwards. When advocacy is successful, always thank everyone and give them their credit for the victory!
